2% are thinking they’re don Quixote’s
Yes the richer get richer and the poor stay poor
Selling up as Spanish are racist towards us English bring here now .
The Brits shot themselves in the foot with Brexit, looks like the Spanish will do the same with tourism! We now live in a society of division, entitlement and a complaining mentality 😔
Money isn't everything. Most of that income mentioned, gets funneled up the top tiers, the "600,000 plus"-earners mentioned in the beginning. If a country cannot implement a fair balance, per regulation, it indeed "shoots itself in the foot". An easy fix would be setting aside a fixed percentage of accommodation in tourist centers (say, 10%) which must be classed as "affordable housing" (less that 500€ per small apartment). Regulations can then assure that these are not rented out short-term, or not rented out to foreigners who are not residents of Spain.
One thing is tourism, and another is massive and stupid hypertourism. Many people in Spain do not make a living from tourism, but they suffer from it anyway.
The problem is Spanish people can't afford to live in their own cities anymore because tourism causes a huge raise in housing expenses.
Irish holiday maker found dead covered in bite marks in Magaluf.
It’s quite plain to see. The protests against tourism are being deliberately stirred up. They are nothing more than a diversion tactic against more serious issues .
I lived there for four years, it is full of dangerous immigrants and a communist regime yuck
Meanwhile Greece is raising it's working week to 6 days. I know which I prefer
No, it is predominantly the housing that is swallowed up by AirBnB. Tourism wrecks the housing market, normally the job aren't the highest paid.
Come on! Spanish business hours a crap already, you never know when you’re open, some have 1 hour lunch, but some have 1.5, some have two and some have three, that then knocks on the closing time, you never when too visit, I can’t believe supermarkets don’t open until 9am, in the uk I’ve been shopping and gone to work by 8am
I'm going to Spain soon love the place culture history food everything . however when I went to the travel agents what was on offer all inclusive Egypt ,Turkey, Morocco almost the same price as Spain on half board or for a bit more 2 weeks in Mexico take it from me the bucket and spade brigade will pick everything up and go and won't come back tourisum will collapse well done you will have shot yourselves in the foot the world's a big place you can spend your hard earned bucks elsewhere
Hi Stu, a little tip to curb the extra virgin olive oil.use I cook with the EVOO and a little butter- still healthy but more cost effective.
Spanish Supreme Court upholding the law. Good news!
Interesting that Spain can reduce / remove VAT from a product just to help out their population when they are in the EU, and yet the UK had no control over VAT according to the Brexiters.
Great point on Tourism i sent an email to James Glock on the issue of Barcelona banning airbb in 5 years
There are 2 types of tourists : the ones that know how to travel and the ones that don't. The ones that don't have no civility, they think that they are in their own backyard and do not respect the country;s customs. So I can undersstand the locals being angry. I also live in a touristy city and I see it all the times. Cheers from Vancouver, Canada and thanks for keeping me updates on Spain news. I love to go back there 2 to 3 times a year.
Totally agree. Where I live in Spain, out of 55 houses and apartments, only 12 people live full time. Most are rented out illegally. None have a tourist licence. People just come and disrespect every rule of the urbanisation.
I enjoyed your video, thank you.
I agree over tourism is making impossible for Spaniards to afford a rising cost of living which is pricing real estate out of reach for locals. Reduce tourism and foreign money buying up Spain.
Hi Stu, I enjoyed your video on Santander as all the rest. I was watching a video on a number of beautiful villages in Spain great for visitors and wondering if you might include some in the future. I know you have a family with a lot responsibilities but was thinking how nice it would be with you as our host/guide in lieu of bots often used for narration. Thanks again.
Booked this year’s holiday in Portugal.
Empty flats will just invite sqatters try getting them out
It’s the same the world over ffs locals sell out for big bucks and then blame the buyers! Shits given = zero
"It’s the same the world over ffs rich and wealthy people (in the form of corporations) buy properties as cheap as possible and then blame the outpriced locals when they sell or let homes at an inflated price back to them. Shits given = zero. Greed = endless." There, fixed that for you.
@@youssef16844 Except most of these rentals are mom & operations. Would you seriously consider renting to a local for a mere 500€ per month with all the risks involved? It's a laughable amount of money. It makes more sense to selle the place and keep that money in stocks or other assets.
12:40 Well put Stu - ‘exploiting’ ⛱
i cant believed you just knocked conspiracy theorists. dont ever forget you come from the land of Ned Kelly! there is a global food shortage coming to be followed by a global water shortage. if you haven't looked into WEF and UN Agenda 2030 i strongly encourage you to sit down with your partner and read. in Australia there is an egg shortage and we are limited to 2 cartons per family. all these food industries are being manipulated as tech giants announce their ability to grow food in laboratories. you may not believe in conspiracies but trust me powerful men use people like us and that is a fact. but then again ignorance is bliss and it is your right to be ignorant so who am i to judge saludos de australia
Indeed, supply and demand determines prices, providing monopolies aren't involved.
One million tourists in Pamplona coming plus 2000 pickpokets and nobody complains. Im one of then
We should boycott Spain for a session and let see how they feel then
How many are from uk with the there wealth
the side step feeling towards ‘tourist’ maybe they want empty accommodation for illegal immigrants that way they can sack staff, and get handsomely paid ! just a thought
Hi Stuart, re increasing Anti Tourist sentiments; it seems to me that (apart from more traffic congestion on some of the islands) that 2 of the major problems are: (1) greedy Hoteliers and other Tourist related businesses making lots of money, but paying peanuts to their staff (2) Property owners opting for less regulated Rental 'vehicles', such as AirBnB; and thus creating more shortages of available rental properties, which of course drives the price up! Otherwise, a great show as usual!
I don't understand you Brits, you didn't want to be in the EU, yet you put all your savings and free time in the EU. After all, you have such nice holiday resorts along your own coasts that you just let fall into disrepair. Why not invest in the UK.
Not everyone voted for brexit
Majority tourists here Spain have always been the British since the 1960s , long before the EU .
@@ursus9104 First of all, not all Brits voted for Brexit. However the ones that did, only did so because of what they saw as being a largely undemocratic organisation that didn't seem to listen to it's individual member states concerns, as the MEP's do not Set the Agenda, and were seen as very limited in their influence. Also the EU oligarchy wanted to set up a European Army. Finally Brits for the most part don't have an issue with individual EU Countries or their citizens; quite the opposite - the Brexiteers had an issue with the EU Bureaucrats imposing unwanted diktats on the UK.
Don't like the idea of digital currency. No privacy on what you're spending your money on.
There are parts of the country where the mass tourism is mainly Spaniards and not a guiris thing.
No tourists no income to maintain your economy ! The problem is the politicians who need to sort! won't stop me going to the canaries! 😃
My guess is the alot of these protesters may not live in the area they are socialists and communists travelling round the country protesting as these types are control freaks and utterly hate people having freedom in there lives. when I went to Albania and travelled around abit the hotel owners or managers were overwhelmed and hugged us to death bringing free wine and a bags of locally grown tobacco on the table wasted on me mind, as a non smoker they were pleased brits were visiting there country. There are alternatives to spain
Cut the number of flights coming into the country. Don’t allow millions to be dumped in your communities.
How things change, it was not long ago, when people and businesses were in difficulty due to Covid and the tourists staying away. It's their neighbours and others, they rent these places to the tourists including the spanish tourists. So why not do something about that? Tourists go home, is no answer.
Correctamundo!
Mr Puidgemont's situation is going from bad to worse, the Catalan party in the part of France where he now lives and calls Catalonia North returned less than 3% of the vote last Sunday.
Stuart I would change dumb locals to misinformed locals. It is the local government’s responsibility to control constructing and permitting. The government could “encourage” construction for the working citizens. But to be honest higher priced housing generates more taxes. Politicians do not care about the citizens so long as they can manipulate them to get elected.
Olive oil is a similar price here in the UK. Now I know why.
Very well said Stu. This anti-tourist rhetoric and behaviour is absolutely abhorrent. The issue of of affordable housing and lack of houses is one that effects just about every country in Europe and many other parts of the world. It's not unique to Spain. However, if I witnessed mass demonstrations in Britain saying 'tourists go home' I would hang my head in shame. Some of the language used is nothing short of racist. Besides, it's not tourists that turn their properties into Airbnb units, it's the locals. It's also been the locals that have been turning their properties in the countryside into holiday lets or putting them up for sale. They're not going to say no to a sale if it's a foreign buyer. We all know the problems: Low wage economy; Poor educational standards leaving millions of Spaniards out of work or on low wages throughout their lives; Terrible regional disparity of wealth and opportunity, which is why these protests take place in Andalucia and the Islands; Demographic collapse leading people to move to cities for work and pushing rental and housing prices up (and it's not the Guiris putting those prices up). Politics in Spain is pretty crap and that's the problem. The tourists are "low hanging fruit" as you say Stuart. The response to difficult to fix social problems are not helped by people whipped up by idiotic and simplistic rhetoric. Tourism in Spain brings billions and much of that is in the very poorest regions. Thousands of people in Andalucia have jobs because of it and there's no shame in that. My home country of Wales does not get enough tourists throughout the year or spend big and they can only dream of having the good fortune of that popularity. WT
You are failing your own businesses along the shores of the UK to instead spend them in the hateful EU. Why?
Also re locals not being able to find reasonably priced properties to rent; this seems bizarre considering that the latest INE stats suggest that there are 3.8 Million Empty properties in Spain; half of which are in Coastal Areas!
@welshtoro3256 : Well I couldn't have said it better; you nailed all the major points. As you correctly stated, it's not the tourists that are Renting their homes out via AirBnB, or indeed their country villas! Plus the government hasn't done anything to stop the mass migration from rural areas into the cities, and so driving rental prices up, etc etc. And yes the tourists are an easy target, no doubt whipped up by Politicians who want to distract peoples' attention from the real problems; very much a case of 'Don't look here - look there!' And yes some of the protests do feel a bit racist. Anyway, well said!
Where in welshtoro's post does he say he holidays in the EU?
Employers always complain when workers get benefits.
In many regions of Spain, water is a problem and it's used for "tourism" (hotels, parcs, etc...) and the rest of the land is drying up. Also, people are being priced out of the market when buying a house because of all of the foreigners buying. Everything is getting more expensive and we are left with trash all over the place.
The building of hotels, parks etc. are the fault of the Spanish government for issuing building permits to developers and the price of everything is going up in every country, not just Spain! You may recall the pandemic, we are all paying for the losses in the economy in every country, the price of fuel has caused everything to go up as well! Everything you buy has been carried by a vehicle somewhere in the journey. We visited Spain from Canada this winter and we did not leave any trash anywhere!
@@cindycreateforlife Exactly
It's the diminishing levels of groundwater as well as drought that is the problem. Strawberries in Huelva; Mangoes in Malaga; Bananas in the Canaries, etc, etc. All entirely inappropriate, water thirsty fruits which are grown in a mad fruit gold rush. Local water management is very bad indeed.
You're calling us DUMB LOCALS??? REALLY? Change your channel name to "YOUR NAME " SPEAKS - NOT SPAIN SPEAKS.
@@chryscanariona Perhaps t wasn't listening as carefully as you - but I don't recall Stuart saying that any local people were dumb. Indeed IF he did, that would be incredibly unusual, as he is most polite when talking about 'locals'!
I love my trips to Spain I must admit normally in the winter with all this supposed anti tourism how do these people suppose Spain balances the books although as you've pointed out before people are more annoyed with loutish behaviour people should respect the host countries all the best .
Tourism is extremely important for the economy, but that's just WAY too much now! I'm from the Canary Islands, my village was taken over by tourists, I can barely hear Spanish anymore in the streets, I only hear other languages... no more local food restaurants, only a bunch of pizzerias everywhere... it's just sad. I guess regulations about AirBnBs might help a bit in small towns/villages. I'm ok with tourists staying in touristic areas and just wander around for the day and go back to their hotels at night.
'Im in Tenerife and if I was a 'local' I'd be heartbroken what corrupt politicians, Mayors and various governmental representatives such as police etc colluded (and still collude) with crooked businessmen both local and expat types have done to the island since the 80's. If they had put sufficient resources into the infrastructure and enforced strict building regulations rather than chasing the tourist dollar and brown envelopes the islands would not have suffered as they have. The "lets blame the tourists" is an easy get out from their responsibilities to actually govern for and on behalf of their voters. Adeje is one of the richest provinces in Spain and it apparently sits on huge reserves of cash but it's more interested in getting oneupmanship on Arona or San Miguel than actually helping it's citizens.. The pettiness of local politicians is beyond hilarious.
Well, I've never seen as many tourists in Spain as in the recent years (since the pandemic?) and it's UNBEARABLE. Honestly, we're loosing our own culture and customs because we're flooded with tourists. Tourists who don't always respect us, our land nor our culture. We can't find a place to park, on the beach, we can't walk nor run comfortably in the streets, it's just too much. Let's not talk about all of our houses being bought by foreigners too.
Here in Highlands of Scotland too. So many tourists same old same old. Cash cows. Our culture here is also becoming hidden like Yours. Also it is getting worse too, so much littler now etc. What we must not do is begin to hate eachother. Peace .
From Stu's previous show with shocking videos of trashy beaches following a recent holiday, the Spanish themselves seem quite able to destroy their own environs.
